Leadership is a buzzword that everyone wants to be associated with. With the popularity of the term, there’s a lot of room for error and misconception. Before building your foundation of leadership, read about these myths and we’ll uncover the truth.

MYTH: Management Equals Leadership

The myth of management as leadership is widespread, but the truth is managers are focused on meeting deadlines, streamlining processes and achieving best practices. Leaders are more focused on improving their influence and inspiring others to move. While they are both important, they are not the same.

MYTH: Entrepreneur Equals Leadership

Entrepreneurs often have great ideas, but big picture thinkers aren’t necessarily natural born leaders. Leadership is a challenge that most start-ups have to overcome, and it is a huge factor in why so many fail in the first few years of business.

MYTH: Leaders Reside At The Top

One of the biggest and most widely accepted myths about leadership is the idea that high-level positions are reserved for leaders. This would mean that if you’re in an entry-level position, or closer to the bottom than the top, there’s no room for your leadership development. This notion could not be more inaccurate. The team member who hosts a fundraising campaign for a sick college – that’s a leader.


True leadership starts and ends with influence. It cannot be inherited, awarded, appointed or assigned. True leadership must be earned the old-fashioned way: by rolling up your sleeves, getting your hands dirty and earning the respect of others through your tenacity and performance.
